BACKYARD MOVIEMAKING The magic of the movies...in your own backyard. Anyone can pick up a camcorder and shoot their own backyard movie complete with special effects, spectacular stunts and neighborhood stars. However, if you want to make your movie much more than a hobby, then the big question is, how will you make it stand out? What do you need to do to make your movie both entertaining and profitable? Profitability being crucial to making your next movie and continuing with a career. Our little online guide is meant to assist you with the basics and then provide an open path for you to explore on your own. There is no singular path to make a movie or educate yourself on the process, but we believe a balanced approach is the best. Learn and study movies. Your favorite movies first and then check a movie you would normally not think about. Even a flop (if you can stomach it) will teach you what NOT to do when you are working on your own project. Independent Moviemaking 101 - Never surrender. The hardest part about making a movie is making the movie. Actually completing the project and being able to market it may seem nearly impossible at times, but you must never surrender. This is hard stuff! Making movies. Managing people. Managing time. Trying not to spend money. Trying to get what you can for free. Trying to making everyone happy. Trying not to get discourage. Trying to survive! So how do you keep psyched when it feels like everything is grinding to a halt? How do you make it through until the end? Truly Independent. Doing it yourself. Working from a solid foundation. Finding a committed team. Working together, but remaining in control. It's your life. Desire and knowledge are not enough. You must learn to become assertive enough to take charge without angering people and making them leave. Being the boss without being the heavy (especially if you have people volunteering to help you out). There are many ways to seek financing and others to simple go out and do it. Being truly independent means balancing every single aspect of your movie in your own hands and finding the way to make it happen for you. Always look up and smile :) As you go about reading and studying and working towards your dreams, always remember to look up and smile. MAny people throughout the world do not get the opportunity to ever think about making a movie let alone try to.
