HAROLD JAFFE: 15 SERIAL KILLERS

1)  We loved the premise of 15 SERIAL KILLERS!  Not that we really like them, but the way you've tackled the subject as "docufiction" was brilliant!    What/where did you pull from to tackle such a topic?

*Two incentives: One, to interrogate official culture's condemnation / consumption of extremity, as represented, say, by serial killers, Nazis and sharks. That is, they are evil--keep away from them. But they are charismatic and sexy--buy and eat them.

Two, to arrive at that  space where there is no past or future, just the vibrating hellish present. That space represents an indelible separation from an insupportable culture.

2)  Your words grabbed us and refused to let go.  The entire book being best as a whole, we could not pick one story as a favorite.  Do you have a favorite out of the collection and what makes it your favorite?

*No favorites as such. Though I've spent more time thinking about Manson, I guess, than the others. And I've written a novel based on Manson, as well.

3)  As a new treat to us was the story as "docufiction", which we've discovered you excel at.  What can you tell us about docufiction and what does it mean to you?

*I've written three volumes of what I've called "docufiction": False Positive, 2002, Fifteen Serial Killers, 2003, and most recently Terror-dot-Gov (which is reviewed in the current American Book Review and in The Believer).

The idea is to use what passes for information and specifically news reporting and to twist and torque it so as to tease out its subtexts, that is, its actual meaning. Hence the technique combines documentary and fact.

4)  What other titles of yours would you recommend to new readers of your work?  (I know I'm going to be seeking them all!)

False Positive, Terror-dot-Gov, and my sexual trilogy: Eros Anti-Eros, Straight Razor and Sex for the Millennium.

5)  What inspires you?

*Living and trying to live day-by-day.

6)  What would you like to state to your fans and potential readers?

*Read some of what I've written and feel free to contact me if you wish to.
