MAC MINI Micro-Budget moviemaking now has a most welcome addition to it's arsenal of tools. The Apple Mac mini - a 2.9 pound, 6.5 inches square and 2 inches tall wonder that is a dream to use starting at $499... The Mac mini comes with Apple's iLife suite of applications that includes everything you need to create a micro-movie from HD editing to DVD. iLife is packed with iPhoto for basic photo editing, iMovie HD for HD video editing, iDVD for DVD delivery, GarageBand for custom scoring and song creation, and iTunes for filling up that iPod you've been wanting. Out of the box Mac mini requires you to provide your own Display, Keyboard and Mouse. It fits in nicely to any existing computer setup - just add a KVM switch and your set. We're hooking ours right into our existing network and will happily use it as part of a mini renderfarm for 3D work. Add-ons will bump the price up a bit, but one should grab at least 512mb RAM. We've also taken the larger harddrive option with a new DVD Superdrive - ours is a bit dated and we wanted the faster burn. Now what this means to the micro-budget movie scene is affordability. When we jumped in back in 1985 then again in 1989-1990, editing VCR-VCR with horrid quality drop - you were looking at thousands of dollars for each component. In 1999, our first DV capable computer was $1,500 - then in 2001 $2,500 for one with PRO DVD creation. Now - $500!! Providing you have all else. Jump out on the web and research this. I've found out tidbits that I did not know. One journalist uses Windows XP and grabbed one - he can now sit in his dining room and control his XP machine through the Mac mini. This frees him up to be more mobile in his house and at a price much less than a decent laptop. Our own uses will be much as we use now, with the excepting being rendering of 3D scenes and animation. Without the funds to shell out for a new $3,000 dual processor, the timing of the Mac mini is perfect for yet another phase of THRAE Entertainment! Now go out there and MAKE MOVIES!!! |
