SPIDER PIE

We’ve just devoured a tasty dish entitled, SPIDER PIE. The ingredients are wickedly delicious from the first bite to the last - and yes, we did clean our plates, although we retained red cool-aid smiles. Alyssa Sturgill has served up a delicacy for our senses that left us both breathless and exhilarated. Not since Clive Barker’s BOOKS OF BLOOD have we had such a reaction to the written word.

SPIDER PIE is our first introduction to the genre of irrealism as defined in the book’s introduction by D. Harlin Wilson. The images that come to mind are surreal paintings with the melting clocks and maddening creatures tearing themselves into reality. Since there are no paintings and the commentary reflects portions of society, irreal is the term, and deservedly so given the subject matter that Sturgill serves up on a dark, cracked plate.

Reading SPIDER PIE was such a cathartic experience that it’s difficult to describe exactly how delicious it was. This is a book that we’ll gladly read again and recommend to others who enjoy our type of wordage. A few of the things you’ll find are a girl and her kitten siblings, conjoined twins, maternity to appliances, bunnies from space, rotting corpses and vicious toys. All taking place in irreal worlds that we gladly took part in.

You get 24 short tales loaded with imagery unlike any that we’ve seen before. From the first story through the last we were riveted with quick glimpses into worlds never before heard of. Sturgill’s writing style pulled us right in and did not let go. We devoured the entire pie in one sitting and definitely want second helpings.

From pet leviathans to grisly blood drenched, yet delectable (with chocolate sauce) entrails, SPIDER PIE delivers the goods that we love. Our tastes run towards the macabre and gore of course, so if your are into that - SPIDER PIE is your dish. HIGHLY recommended to those who are craving something new. Alyssa Sturgill is on our favorite authors list and we are hungrily awaiting more goodies.
