One final trick that we used in SCREAMING FOR SANITY was tight close-ups. If your location is questionable, like the office we set up for the patient/shrink conversations we had, shoot extreme close-ups of your actors in conversations. That way the audience will concentrate on the story and acting and not on your Ed Wood-inspired set. I was really worried about those scenes but so far no one has commented on it and other filmmakers and critics have commented on the cool locations we had on SCREAMING FOR SANITY. So a lot of it has to do with lighting, set dressing, and photography. Always keep that in mind.

Most of the other TRUTH III locations were pretty easy- public boardwalks and the receptive college again doubling for the mental institution. All in all, TRUTH III came out pretty decent-looking, despite our lack of cooperation at first in the location department.

I hope these stories and ideas have inspired you in going out and getting your vision on tape or film. Don't let a thing like "not being able to find the right location" stop you. There is always a way, whether it's in your back yard, in the garage, at a friend or neighbor's house around the corner, or at a motel down the road. The key is in the way you execute the shots, dress and light your sets, and edit it all together. After all, in the end, everything is designed to achieve one thing and one thing alone: a twisted illusion! Go for it!
